As a modern intellectual, Mernissi seeks to revive the true position of women in society by utilizing Western and Sunni Islamic sources. Most of her sensitivities stem from the cultural conditions of her birthplace, Morocco, and most of her attention is focused on the historical conditions of Arab women. By analyzing the history of early Islam, she seeks to prove her interpretation of the religion, which is in line with feminist ideas. She believes that in the essence of Islam there is no difference between the rights of men and women; however, the patriarchal Arab culture has overcome Islamic teachings and offers laws that are contrary to women's rights. This article uses a descriptive-analytical method to criticize Mernissi's views. The most important finding of this research is that; despite Mernissi's eloquent writing, different perspective, and concern for women, in some cases his views did not correspond to the definitive and inviolable principles of Islam. This could be due to incorrect assumptions, selective approach in choosing sources, female prejudices in selecting historical events, incorrect analysis and interpretation of historical events and Islamic rulings, and lack of necessary awareness of religious foundations and frameworks.
